Aircon units in Singapore fail faster than the same models installed in drier climates. The reason is not heat — it is humidity.
What humidity does to a fan coil
The evaporator coil runs below dew point, so it is permanently wet while the unit is on. Wet surfaces catch airborne dust, and the resulting paste is an ideal medium for biological growth. That is the musty smell, and it is also what chokes airflow.
Why filters alone are not enough
Filters catch the large particles. The fine dust that reaches the coil passes straight through. Cleaning filters monthly is worth doing, but it does not substitute for periodic coil cleaning.
General service, chemical wash, or overhaul?
- General service — quarterly. Filters, coil vacuum, drainage, gas check.
- Chemical wash — every 6 to 12 months, or when cooling weakens and smells appear. Coil and blower cleaned chemically, on the wall.
- Chemical overhaul — every 2 to 3 years, or when a wash no longer restores performance. Fan coil dismantled and every component treated.
The mess problem, solved
The traditional objection to chemical washing is water damage. A waterproof shroud fitted around the unit contains all run-off, so the coil can be deep cleaned in place without risk to paint, wallpaper or flooring.
