Aircon servicing is an easy trade to enter and a hard one to judge from the outside. These are the questions that reliably separate the two kinds of technician.
"What did you find?"
A good technician leaves you with specifics: pressure readings, temperature differential, the state of the coil. A vague "it is fine now" after twenty minutes usually means a filter rinse and nothing else.
"Do I actually need gas?"
Refrigerant is not consumed. A recommendation to top up should always come with an explanation of where it went and a leak test. Routine gas top-ups on every visit are the clearest red flag in the trade.
"Is that a wash or an overhaul?"
The two are priced very differently and cleaned very differently. Ask which one is being quoted, and what specifically is dismantled.
"Who is coming?"
Companies that use their own trained crews can tell you. Companies that broker jobs out to whoever is free cannot.
Red flags worth walking away from
- Quotes given over the phone without seeing the units
- Pressure to replace units after a single visit
- No written scope of what a "service" includes
- No warranty on workmanship
